I think we have reached a place in our history where we can no longer afford to merely talk about being the change, but it is time to actively be the change. Our words, attitudes and actions will effectively define the future one way or the other – life or death, positivity or not.
Waking up this morning to the absolute horrific truth that a single human made the decision to take what wasn’t his, not only from the individuals he shot, but those who loved them, and the peace of society as a whole, I am so angry, and yet so compelled to act. When my older two kids were in primary school, we talked about safe choices with drugs, cigarettes, healthy touch and strangers. Now with my younger two, we have added what to do in the event of an active shooter and how capable they are if mom can’t get to them for a while.
That God is with them and they are able.
I used to talk with my kids about the blessing of living in a country where they don’t have to worry about their own military invading our home, and we prayed for those children growing up in war zones. Now, those war zones are fast becoming a reality in this country as well. We have always had violence in this country – such has been the way of the world for thousands of years – but it would sometimes seem we have crossed a line that no one knows how to come back from.
As parents, it is imperative we prepare our children. Empower them. In our family, we know what to do and we trust our God will be with us. We do not live in fear, but are aware and prepared to face all things – knowing that life happens, BUT, we have the power to choose our response. While I still often struggle with it internally, I do no favors to my children by thinking I cannot teach them to be stronger and more equipped until I myself have achieved perfection in that area. No, we move forward and choose faith in ALL situations.
None of us is a mistake, each has a defined destiny and nobody is without an expiration date. We need to live out loud – trusting in our purpose and position to effectively contribute to this world. To give in to fear is to never fully live. We will never be able to explain the evil of this world, but we are powerful to live out the love inside of us!
Today, be encouraged – do not fear. Walk uprightly, pray for those who mourn, do your part to contribute to the world around you and love. Love with all you have in this moment. This moment is all you can control anyway.
2 Timothy 1:7 – For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind.
